Frequently Asked Questions & Care Guide

Welcome to the Dark Moon Hiking FAQ. Whether you're looking for details on our materials, wondering how to care for your handmade quilt, or curious about how our custom builds work, you'll find everything you need right here.

Custom Orders & Crafting

  •  Where is your gear made?

Every single piece of equipment—from our ultralight storage sacks to our custom quilts—is meticulously hand-sewn right here in our workshop in New South Wales, Australia.

  •  How do custom quilt orders work?

Our custom double quilts and sleeping bags are built to order to match your specific warmth, length, and color preferences. Because each item is crafted by hand, please check our current turnaround and lead times listed at checkout or reach out directly if you have a specific target date for an upcoming trip.

  •  Can I request a custom size or feature not listed on the website?

We love tackling custom dimensions or unique setups! If you have a specific vision in mind that isn’t covered by our standard options, drop us a message through our contact page, and we can discuss what's possible.

Materials & Performance (DCF & Down)

  •  What is Dyneema® Composite Fabric (DCF), and why do you use it?

DCF (formerly known as Cuben Fiber) is an advanced, high-performance non-woven composite material. It offers an incredible strength-to-weight ratio, is 100% waterproof, and does not absorb water or stretch when wet. It's the gold standard for ultralight backpackers who want maximum durability with minimum pack weight.

  •  Are your storage sacks and zipper pouches completely waterproof?

The DCF fabric itself is waterproof. While our bags are constructed with precision and feature water-resistant zippers, they are designed as highly weather-resistant gear organizers and food/storage sacks. For total submersion protection, we always recommend pairing them with proper packing techniques.

  •  How do I maintain my down quilt or sleeping bag?

To keep your down lofted and performing at its best:

On the trail: Give your quilt time to loft up after unpacking it each evening. Protect it from prolonged moisture.

At home: Never store your quilt compressed in a tight stuff sack long-term. Store it uncompressed in a large cotton storage bag or hang it up in a dry, well-ventilated space to protect the down clusters.

Washing: When cleaning is necessary, hand-wash gently with a specialized technical down detergent (like Nikwax Down Wash) or machine wash on a delicate, front-loading cycle with cold water. Tumble dry on low with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps and restore loft.

Shipping & Delivery

  • Where do you ship?

We ship Australia-wide so local hikers can gear up for trails across the country, as well as select international destinations.

  •  How long will my order take to arrive?

Ready-to-ship items (like stock storage sacks and accessories) typically ship within a few business days. Custom-made items (like quilts and sleeping bags) require dedicated crafting time at the workbench. Once shipped, tracking details will be sent directly to your email.
